A police officer in Delta State has been arrested after a viral video showed him shooting at an unarmed civilian’s vehicle in Asaba. The Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, ordered an investigation, while spokesperson SP Bright Edafe condemned the act as “unprofessional and unbecoming.” The officer, now in custody, reportedly claimed he was responding to a hit-and-run case, but the command stressed that his use of a firearm violated Force Order 237.
The police assured the public that the officer would face disciplinary action under the Police Act. The case adds to growing concerns about excessive use of force by Nigerian police, following similar incidents in recent years.
