Retired police officers under the Association of Retired Police Officers, Imo Chapter, protested in Owerri on Tuesday, demanding a total exit from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS). They described the scheme as "deadly and obnoxious," blaming it for numerous deaths among retirees. Led by their chairman, retired SP Amanze Nwakwue, the group called for the creation of a dedicated Police Pension Board similar to that of the military and requested a debarment allowance. They questioned why senior officers like AIGs and DIGs had exited the CPS while lower ranks remained.
The retirees urged President Bola Tinubu to sign an executive order for their full withdrawal from the scheme, as has been done for the military, DSS, NIA, and National Assembly staff. They also demanded that pension bond funds be paid directly to individual retirees rather than through PFAs and called for the scrapping of NPF Pension Limited. The state Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, received their protest and assured them that the Inspector-General of Police was addressing their concerns and committed to improving retirees' welfare.
