NLC Missing As FG And TUC Convene At Aso Rock For Subsidy Discussions

The representatives of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) are currently engaged in a meeting with the federal government at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Notably, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is absent from this meeting. The government initiated this meeting, which commenced at approximately 5 pm, to address the aftermath of the fuel subsidy removal.

Last Wednesday, the Organised Labour held a meeting with the government, but it concluded without reaching an agreement. It has been reliably gathered that the NLC has insisted on the government reverting to the previous petrol price of N195 before engaging in meaningful negotiations. The NLC also asserts that there are inadequate measures in place to alleviate the impact of the high petrol price, which is adversely affecting goods and services.

The federal government’s delegation is led by Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). Other members include Godwin Emefie, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN); Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, former Governor of Edo State; and Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). Additional participants in the meeting include Zacch Adedeji, the Executive Secretary of the National Sugar Development Council (NSDC); Yemi Adetunji, the Executive Vice President, Downstream, of the NNPCL; Mr Dele Alake, former Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy; and Hon James Faleke, among others.

On the side of the TUC, there are seven members present, with Mr Festus Osifo, their President, leading the delegation.

Further details will be provided later.
