Suspected pirates have reportedly hijacked two boats in Rivers State’s waterways, potentially resulting in the death of a female passenger. The incident occurred on Monday as the boats were traveling from Abonema to Kula in the Akuku-Toru Local Government Area. According to the maritime union workers, each boat was carrying 12 passengers, many of whom jumped into the river in an attempt to evade abduction.
Israel Pepple, the Chairman of the Nigeria Maritime Union Workers in Rivers State, received notification of the incident from his unit officials. Initially, they informed him that one lady had been taken by the pirates. However, a subsequent call at noon conveyed the tragic news of her death as her lifeless body was found floating in the water and subsequently recovered in Abonnema. The matter has been reported to the marine police in Abonnema.
Pepple expressed concern about the resurgence of attacks in the waterways and appealed to Governor Siminialayi Fubara to prioritize security measures. He emphasized the need for enhanced security, including more gunboats, increased security patrols by the joint task force, and the placement of houseboats and security personnel in strategic areas.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations were underway. No arrests have been made at the time of her statement.
