Undergraduate Student Of UNILAG Shot Dead Over Alleged Stolen Mobile Phone

A tragic incident occurred on Saturday at Harvey Road, Moore Road Junction in the Yaba area of Lagos state, resulting in the death of an undergraduate student from the University of Lagos (UNILAG). The victim, identified as Adekunle, and his fellow student Opeyemi were traveling together on a shuttle bus from Yaba to UNILAG. During the journey, a man hanging at the back of the bus stole Opeyemi’s iPhone 7 plus.

Disturbed by the theft, Opeyemi raised an alarm, prompting Adekunle to pursue the thief who jumped off the bus and fled. As Adekunle closed in on the suspect, another individual, believed to be an accomplice of the fleeing thief, unexpectedly appeared and fatally shot Adekunle in the head. Sadly, the 23-year-old undergraduate died instantly.

An eyewitness, speaking anonymously for security reasons, provided details of the incident. According to the witness, the robber’s associate shot Adekunle at close range on the left side of his head. The witness also mentioned finding an ATM card bearing the name Adekunle on the victim’s person.

A photograph obtained by our correspondent shows Adekunle lying motionless on the crime scene floor, dressed in black attire. Police officers arrived later and transported his body to the morgue at Mainland Hospital.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that an investigation had commenced to apprehend the suspects involved in the attack. He further stated that the command had informed the victim’s family, and the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) at Panti for thorough investigation.

When approached for comment, the spokesperson for UNILAG, Adejoke Alaga-Ibrahim, declined to provide a response over the phone. She requested a formal request to be sent via email to communicationunit@unilag.edu.ng or invited the correspondent to the university to speak with the Dean of Students Affairs.
