In Florida, United States, an unidentified 58-year-old white woman fatally shot Ajike Owens, a 35-year-old black mother of four children. The incident occurred when Owens was shot through her door in front of her 9-year-old son. The white woman had complained about Owens’ children playing outside. However, no arrests have been made yet due to the application of the “stand your ground” law in the state, as reported by the Daily Mail on Tuesday.
According to civil rights attorney Ben Crump, the tragic event unfolded when Owens’ children were playing in a field near an apartment complex in Ocala, Florida, on Friday. Their neighbor began yelling at them, demanding they leave her property and using racial slurs against them. The children complied and left the field but realized they had left their iPad behind. They returned to retrieve it, and that’s when the white woman threw the device at one of the children, causing the screen to crack upon impact.
Upon learning about the incident, Owens crossed the street to address her neighbor. It was during this encounter that the white woman fired a shot through the door, hitting Owens, who later succumbed to her gunshot wounds at the hospital.
Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods confirmed that the identity of the shooter is known. The authorities are currently investigating the incident to determine the potential application of the “stand your ground” law in Florida, which allows individuals to use deadly force if they believe their lives are in danger.
