74 Reps-Elect From North West Back Abbas, Kalu

A total of 74 out of 92 elected members representing seven states in the North-West geopolitical zone have given their endorsement to Tajudeen Abbas and Benjamin Kalu for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker, respectively, in the upcoming 10th House of Representatives.

The All Progressive Congress’ National Working Committee recently announced a zoning formula for the leadership positions ahead of the National Assembly’s inauguration on June 13. According to the statement, Senator Godswill Akpabio from the South-South region is the preferred candidate for the Senate Presidency, while Senator Jibrin Barau from the North-West region is the chosen candidate for the Deputy Presidency of the Senate.

For the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker, the NWC selected Hon Tajudeen Abbas from the North-West and Hon Benjamin Kalu from the South-East, respectively.

During a meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday night, the elected lawmakers from the North-West geopolitical zone, under the North-West Coordination Forum for Hon. Abbas Tajudeen for Speaker 10th Assembly, unanimously accepted the All Progressives Congress’ zoning formula for the leadership positions in the 10th Assembly. They called upon other contenders to withdraw in favor of Abbas and Kalu for the sake of national interest and unity. A total of 74 lawmakers attended the meeting and issued an eight-point communiqué, which was signed by Rt. Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa, the Majority Leader and chairman of the North-West Caucus of the 9th House of Representatives.

The communiqué emphasized that the zoning arrangement proposed by the ruling party aligns with the principle of federal character as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution. It also highlighted the significance of having experienced and competent individuals who possess extensive knowledge of legislative affairs and governance to preside over the House of Representatives.

Considering Dr. Tajudeen Abass and Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu’s impressive track records as legislators, including being the highest-ranking sponsors of bills and motions in the House of Representatives, the group declared their support for their candidacy. They recognized the value of having an experienced legislator like Abass as the Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives.

As a result, the group officially endorsed Abass and Kalu for the leadership positions in the House.
