The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, disclosed that the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, approved 129 bills that were passed by the ninth Senate. He emphasized that the ninth Senate accomplished significant achievements during the past four years.
Lawan stated that the Senate introduced and successfully passed crucial legislations aimed at reforming and boosting the economy, as well as enhancing transparency in government processes. Over the course of their tenure, they presented a total of 1,129 bills, out of which 500 were successfully passed.
Out of all the bills passed, the President assented to 129, which marks the highest number of bills assented to by any Assembly in Nigeria’s history. Recently, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also assented to two bills passed by the 9th National Assembly, namely the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Fifth Alteration) (No.37) Bill, 2023. This bill extended the retirement age of high court judges and others from 65 to 70 years. Additionally, the President assented to the Electricity Act 2023, which replaced the Electricity and Power Sector Reform Act of 2005.
Lawan highlighted that apart from the impressive numbers, the laws enacted by the ninth Senate covered various priority areas outlined in their Legislative Agenda. Furthermore, the Senate actively addressed the concerns of their constituents by moving 361 motions and passing 488 resolutions. These motions and resolutions served as a means to draw the government’s attention to specific issues and seek intervention.
Lawan expressed his gratitude to his colleagues for electing him as the President of the 9th Senate. He considered it an honor and privilege to serve as a member of the esteemed legislative body and preside over its activities during a defining moment in Nigeria’s history.
