Enyimba Warriors Clinch Ninth NPFL Title

Enyimba, the two-time African champions, clinched the 2022/23 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title by dethroning Rivers United in an exhilarating match. The final game of the NPFL Super 6 playoffs in Lagos ended in a 1-1 draw, which, due to a superior goal difference, was sufficient for Enyimba to secure their ninth league title. This victory also earned them the highest prize money ever awarded in the league, N100m. Remo Stars finished on par with Enyimba, both accumulating nine points in the playoffs.

Enyimba took the lead in the first half when Ekene Awazie capitalized on a failed clearance inside the Rivers box. However, Nyima Nwagua equalized for the defending champions early in the second half. Despite requiring a win to retain their title, Rivers United faced a determined Enyimba defense that held firm throughout the second half. Consequently, Rivers United dropped to third place in the standings, securing a spot in the CAF Confederation Cup, while Enyimba and Remo Stars will compete in the CAF Champions League.

After a disappointing previous season under Finidi George, Enyimba celebrated their first NPFL title in four years and secured their return to the CAF Champions League, having missed out on the competition last season. Interestingly, Enyimba’s previous title came during the abridged 2019 season when they won the playoffs with 12 points.

Enyimba’s journey to success in the NPFL dates back to their first title triumph in 2001, followed by consecutive titles in 2002 and 2003. They claimed their fourth and fifth titles in 2005 and 2006 respectively, and added their sixth and seventh in 2010 and 2015 respectively.
