Senate President Godswill Akpabio, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Akwa Ibom State, is currently visiting President Bola Tinubu at the State House. This visit follows Akpabio’s recent inauguration as the 10th Senate President. In a closely contested election, Akpabio secured victory over his opponent Abdullazeez Yari, an APC member from Zamfara State, with a vote count of 66 against 43.
Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom State, faced off against Yari, a first-term Senator and former governor of Zamfara State. Two other contenders, Orji Uzor-Kalu from Abia State (also a former governor) and Osita Izunaso from Imo State (both APC members), withdrew from the race after receiving persuasions from the All Progressives Congress and the President.
It’s worth noting that the APC National Working Committee (NWC) had specifically designated the position of Senate President to the South-South region and specifically to Akpabio. Akpabio had previously stepped down for President Tinubu during the APC Convention held at Eagle Square in Abuja in 2022.
