Suspected Kidnapper Dies While Trying To Flee Arrest

A suspected member of a kidnapping syndicate involved in the abduction of a 23-year-old student from Bauchi State University collapsed and died while attempting to evade capture at a military checkpoint.

The deceased, along with two accomplices, had forcibly taken a 2010 Toyota Camry to transport their victim. Their luck ran out when they reached a military checkpoint manned by operatives from the 133 Special Forces Battalion in Azare, Katagum Local Government Area of Bauchi state. The authorities promptly apprehended them.

During the arrest, the deceased managed to escape briefly but suddenly collapsed and was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Center in Azare. A medical doctor there pronounced him dead.

In a media statement released on Tuesday, the Bauchi State Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Ahmed Wakil, confirmed these events. He also mentioned that the Special Forces Battalion had handed over the other two suspects to the Police Command.

He said: “Based on inter-agency collaboration towards complementing the constitutional mandates of the Police as a lead Agency in maintaining the internal security, six suspects were handed over to the Command by operatives of 133 Special Forces Battalion based in Azare, Bauchi state.

“Preliminary investigation uncovered that the suspects kidnapped a 23-year old student of Bauchi State University, Gadau, residing at Federal Low Cost of Azare town, Bauchi state and whisked away the victim along with a snatched Toyota Camry 2010 with Reg No. (Withheld), took their victim swiftly headed to the Misau town route.

“Upon receiving the distress call, the military stationed at the checkpoint responded immediately and intercepted the stolen vehicle alongside the suspects.

“Meanwhile, the victim was rescued unhurt.

“However, one of the suspects Damilola James, male, of Turum area of Bauchi slumped while trying to escape before reaching the checkpoint and was taken to Federal Medical Center (FMC) Azare for immediate medical attention but certified dead by a medical doctor.”

He stated that the items found in the possession of the suspects include eight different mobile phones, knives, and various charms known as “Juju.”

He further mentioned that, as part of the ongoing investigation, all the suspects have confessed to the crime. Following this, a thorough investigation has been initiated, and once completed, the suspects will be charged and brought to court for prosecution.

Likewise, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) informed that officers from the Command have apprehended Suleiman Samaila, a 32-year-old male student of Bauchi State University, Itas Gadau Campus, for inflicting serious injuries on a fellow student.

According to available reports, on June 10, 2023, at approximately 5:15 pm, a dispute arose among students during a friendly football match at the off-campus football pitch of Bauchi State University, Itas Gadau campus.

“In the course of the incident, Suleiman Samaila assaulted Safiyanu Adam Musa, a 23-year-old bio-chemistry student in his second year at the same institution. Consequently, the victim sustained a severe injury to his left hand.”

Upon receiving the report, a team of police officers visited the scene, transported the victim to the Federal Medical Centre in Azare for medical treatment, and he is currently recovering from the deep cut inflicted during the altercation.

Wakil affirmed that the arrested suspect has admitted to the crime and will face charges in court based on the established offenses once the discreet investigation concludes.
