President Bola Tinubu has expressed his congratulations to Godswill Akpabio, the new Senate President, and Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, on their successful election as presiding officers of the 10th National Assembly.
During the Senate election, Akpabio emerged as President by securing 63 votes, surpassing Senator-elect Abdulaziz Yari, the former Governor of Zamfara State, who received 46 votes.
In the House of Representatives, Abbas, who was the preferred candidate of the All Progressives Congress, garnered 353 votes, defeating his opponents Ahmed Wase, the former Deputy Speaker, and Aminu Jaji, who both received three votes each.
In a statement issued on Tuesday and personally signed by Tinubu, he acknowledged that being elected by their peers as presiding officers and assuming leadership roles in the National Assembly is a significant honor that entails substantial responsibility.
“I trust that you will justify the confidence reposed in you by your members and many Nigerians.
“As your president, I am prepared to transparently work with the National Assembly. Nigerians expect distinguished senators and honourable members to make laws and carry out oversight duties that will enhance the performance of government to achieve successful outcomes, including improving their quality of life.”
