Referee Dies On Football Pitch After Thunder Strike, Heavy Rainfall In Niger

During a friendly football match in Madalla town, Niger State, a Nigerian referee tragically passed away on the field after the game was disrupted by heavy rain followed by thunder strikes. The referee, known among football fans as Mustafa Coach 02 and reportedly a member of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), met his untimely demise on Tuesday evening while officiating the match on the community’s school field in Madalla, Niger State.

According to an eyewitness named Muhammed Musa, the match between Suleja and Madalla youths was on halftime break at approximately 5:20 pm when the incident occurred. Due to the rainfall, all the players and their fans sought shelter inside the school’s classrooms. However, the referee and his assistant (line man) swiftly returned to the field, urging the players to join them.

As they reached the center of the pitch, tragedy struck with a thunderbolt. Two of them were immediately rushed to a hospital, where one, Sulaiman, was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival, while his assistant was revived.

The deceased referee, whose family member identified him as Ibrahim, was laid to rest on Wednesday morning in Suleja town, where he resided.
