Allegedly, individuals suspected to be involved in internet fraud, commonly referred to as “yahoo boys,” have reportedly sexually assaulted an elderly woman in her seventies who resides in an urban area of Sapele, a historic city in the Delta state. Waffi TV learnt the perpetrators, whose exact number remains unknown, forcibly entered the woman’s residence during the early hours of today.
As of now, there are reports suggesting that the woman is experiencing severe bleeding. Local sources in the community informed Waffi TV that the rape of elderly women who live with their grandchildren has unfortunately become a disturbing trend among suspected yahoo boys in Sapele and other parts of the state. A female staff member from Delta State University of Education, Agbor, located in the Ika area, shared with Vanguard that, due to concerns for the safety of their elderly mother, they had to promptly relocate her to her daughter’s house in Agbor after her husband, the woman’s spouse, passed away.
“The boys have become another thing. They now go in group to rape old women living with their grandchildren.
“We had to move my mum in Agbor to her daughters house for fear that she could be a target after my dad passed on”, the staff said.
During Waffi TV discussions with various individuals, there were widespread speculations that the recent trend among yahoo boys might be connected to money rituals.
According to a resident of Sapele, the motivation behind these acts is primarily related to rituals aimed at acquiring wealth. He expressed concerns about the yahoo boys targeting villages where a higher number of elderly women live. He questioned why a young man in his twenties would engage in such acts unless it was for the purpose of rituals.
