Uganda: 25 Students Killed By Militants In School Attack

The details regarding the nature of the attack and the cause of death of the victims were not provided by the police.

In what is considered the most severe assault of its kind in years, militants affiliated with the Islamic State group have murdered 25 students in western Uganda, as reported by local officials and the police on Saturday.

Following a cross-border raid on a secondary school located in the Kasese district near the Democratic Republic of Congo, the military has stated that it is actively pursuing militants from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF). The ADF, which operates in the conflict-ridden eastern region of the DR Congo, attacked Lhubiriha Secondary School in Mpondwe. According to Fred Enanga, the national police spokesperson, the assailants set fire to a dormitory and looted a food store. The recovered bodies of 25 victims have been transported to Bwera Hospital, a nearby town. In addition, eight individuals who were critically injured are currently receiving treatment at Bwera Hospital.

Joe Walusimbi, the Resident Commissioner for Kasese, informed AFP that several students are still missing, and all the confirmed deceased individuals so far were students at the school.

The details regarding the nature of the attack and the cause of death of the victims were not provided by the police.

The targeted school is situated less than two kilometers (1.2 miles) from the border with the DR Congo, where the ADF predominantly operates and has been accused of killing thousands of civilians since the 1990s.

Enanga mentioned that the army and police units are in “hot pursuit” of the attackers, who fled in the direction of Virunga National Park across the border in the DR Congo. Felix Kulayigye, spokesperson for the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces, stated that the ADF might have also abducted certain individuals. He further declared that their forces are actively pursuing the enemy in order to rescue the abducted and dismantle the ADF group, as conveyed in his statement.
