Kylian Mbappe, the forward for Paris Saint-Germain, believes he is deserving of the esteemed Ballon d’Or award for this year. Despite tough competition from Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland, Mbappe asserts that he has met the necessary criteria to win the accolade.
Notably, Mbappe led the French national team to the FIFA World Cup final, where he delivered a remarkable hat-trick against Argentina, although his team ultimately fell short in the penalty shootout. In addition to earning a silver medal, he was honored with the Golden Boot and received widespread acclaim for his inspirational performance.
At the club level, Mbappe played a pivotal role in PSG’s triumph as the champions of Ligue 1 this season. During the recently concluded 2022-23 season, the 23-year-old recorded an impressive tally of 41 goals and 10 assists in 40 appearances for PSG.
Speaking in an interview with the French television network TF1, Mbappe expressed confidence in his chances of winning the Ballon d’Or.
“The Ballon d’Or? It’s always difficult to talk about an individual trophy because you have to put yourself forward,” he said.
“Do I deserve the Ballon d’Or? With the new criteria, what counts? Catching the eye, scoring goals and making an impact? I think I fit those criteria. I’d say yes, but it’s the people who vote and I’m always optimistic.”
