Why I Suspended Emefiele- Tinubu

The President disclosed that individuals living abroad faced difficulties in sending money to their parents and relatives due to the existence of multiple exchange rates.

President Bola Tinubu has addressed the suspension and subsequent arrest of the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.

On June 9, Tinubu suspended Emefiele in order to facilitate an investigation into various allegations against the former CBN governor.

Emefiele was subsequently apprehended in Lagos State and transported to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, by the Department of State Services, where he is currently undergoing interrogation.

During an interactive session with Nigerians residing in France and neighboring countries on Friday, Tinubu commented on the entire matter, stating that the financial system was corrupt under Emefiele’s leadership.

The President disclosed that individuals living abroad faced difficulties in sending money to their parents and relatives due to the existence of multiple exchange rates. However, Tinubu assured the audience that such issues have now been resolved.

He said: “Then the financial system was rotten. Few people made bags of money and then you yourself, you stopped sending money home to our poor parents. Several windows. But that is gone now. It’s gone.

“The man is in the hands of the authorities. Something is being done about that. They will sort themselves out.”
