The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is scheduled to hold a meeting this week to address significant matters pertaining to the upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Imo, Bayelsa, and Kogi states, Waffi TV learnt.

A reliable source within the commission revealed that the meeting will also cover the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR).

On October 25, 2022, the commission reached a resolution during a meeting to conduct the off-cycle governorship elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi on November 11, 2023.

On June 6, 2023, INEC released the final list of candidates for these elections.

The list indicated that 18 political parties are fielding candidates in Kogi State, 17 in Imo State, and 16 in Bayelsa State.

Furthermore, it highlighted that two political parties have nominated female candidates in Bayelsa State, one in Kogi State, and none in Imo State.

Campaigns in all three states commenced on June 14 and will conclude on November 9.

Meanwhile, the CVR is expected to conclude 90 days prior to the election date, as stated in Section 9(6) of the Electoral Act (2022). This section specifies that the registration, updating, and revision of the voter register shall not be carried out later than 90 days before any election covered by the Act.

Last month, a civil society organization called Catch them Young Community Initiative urged INEC to conduct the CVR before the governorship elections. The group expressed concern regarding youth participation in these elections.

Nonso Orakwe, the Executive Director of the organization, emphasized that the failure to conduct the CVR before the election would result in the disenfranchisement of many young people in the respective states.

When questioned about the commencement of the CVR in the states, an anonymous official from the commission stated that a decision on the matter, among other things, will be made during the upcoming meeting next week.
