The leader of mutinous Russian mercenaries, who had advanced close to Moscow, announced on Saturday that they have agreed to retreat in order to prevent bloodshed. This decision represents a de-escalation of the significant challenge they posed to President Vladimir Putin’s authority.

The private army, known as Wagner and led by former Putin ally Yevgeny Prigozhin, had already made significant progress towards the capital, capturing Rostov and embarking on a 1,100 km (680 miles) race to Moscow.

Prigozhin conveyed in an audio message that the fighters would return to their base due to the potential risk of violence. A deal was brokered by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko’s office, halting the further movement of Wagner fighters across Russia in exchange for safety guarantees for the rebels.

During a televised address from the Kremlin, Putin emphasized that Russia’s very existence was at stake. He stated, “We are fighting to protect the lives and security of our people, our sovereignty and independence, and our thousand-year history as Russia. Those who have chosen the path of betrayal, armed insurrection, blackmail, and terrorism will face inevitable punishment and be held accountable under the law and by our people.”

Subsequently, according to RIA news agency, Putin signed a law tightening regulations regarding the violation of martial law in areas where it has been imposed.

Reuters obtained video footage showing troop carriers and two flatbed trucks, each transporting a tank, traveling 30 miles (50 km) beyond Voronezh, which is over halfway to Moscow. A helicopter fired upon them in the video.

Prigozhin, whose private army engaged in fierce battles in Ukraine while he clashed with military leaders for months, claimed to have captured the headquarters of Russia’s Southern Military District in Rostov without any gunfire.

Rostov serves as the primary logistical support center for Russia’s entire invading force in Ukraine.
