On Sunday, the Sokoto State Police Command officially verified the occurrence of the murder of a butcher named Usman Buda, which was reportedly motivated by allegations of blasphemy.
According to a statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Ahmad Rufa’i, they received a distress call at 9:20 am stating that the victim, Usman Buda, hailing from Gwandu Local Government Area and working as a butcher at Sokoto Abattoir, had purportedly made blasphemous remarks about the Holy Prophet. Consequently, he was in imminent danger of being attacked by a mob.
According to the statement, “Upon receiving the information, the Commissioner of Police, Area Commander Metro, and DPO Kwanni led a team of policemen and all other operational commanders to the scene.”
Upon sighting police operatives, the mob reportedly dispersed, leaving the victim unconscious.
After being rescued and transported to the Usmanu Danfodio University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) for medical attention, Buda’s unfortunate demise was later confirmed.
The police have stated that they are currently conducting an investigation with the aim of apprehending the culprits and ensuring they face the consequences of their actions.
