The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on President Bola Tinubu to consider appointing a candidate from the southern region as the next Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
In a statement released by HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Mr Emmanuel Onwubiko, the association expressed concern regarding the consistent appointment of individuals from the northern part of Nigeria to the position of EFCC Chairman, creating a perception of regional bias. HURIWA emphasized the need to give competent individuals from the southern region an equal opportunity to contribute to the anti-corruption efforts.
Recognizing Tinubu’s reputation as a prominent leader committed to fairness, justice, and equity, HURIWA urged him to uphold these principles by appointing a suitable candidate from the South to lead the EFCC.
“Such a decision would send a powerful message of unity and inclusivity, fostering a harmonious and balanced Nigeria.
“We firmly believe that a candidate from the southern region should be appointed as the next EFCC Chairman to ensure a fair distribution of power and showcase the competence of individuals from diverse backgrounds.
“It is essential to rectify the existing regional imbalance within the EFCC by appointing a candidate from the South as the next chairman, to address the perception of bias and create a more balanced representation within the institution.
HURIWA has reiterated the significance of Nigeria’s diverse representation and inclusive practices within national institutions, such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The organization has called for the appointment of the EFCC chairman to be based on merit, competence, and a proven track record in combating corruption.
Furthermore, HURIWA advocates for the nationalization of the EFCC Chairmanship to ensure fair representation from all regions of Nigeria. By prioritizing transparency and credibility in the appointment process, HURIWA believes that Nigeria can enhance its efforts in tackling economic and financial crimes while fostering a more inclusive and united nation.
