Dayo Israel, a witness who appeared before the Lagos State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, made a revelation on Tuesday. According to Israel, the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and his wife, Ibijoke, were able to vote in the March 18 governorship election despite possessing invalid voter cards. Israel, who acted as an agent for the Labour Party for Unit 006, Ward 15, Lagos Island Local Government, provided this testimony as part of the petition initiated by the Labour Party’s candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, in an attempt to invalidate Governor Sanwo-Olu’s victory.

The witness informed the court that he personally witnessed the card reader indicating that both Sanwo-Olu and his wife had invalid cards, yet they were still allowed to cast their votes. He perceived this as a violation of the electoral process of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

“I observed that the card reader showed their cards to be invalid but Sanwo-Olu and his wife were allowed to cast their votes and this is against INEC’s electoral process,” he said.

During the cross-examination by Charles Edosomwan, the counsel representing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Dayo Israel made a claim that he was physically assaulted by supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on the day of the election. Israel asserted that he identified them as APC supporters based on their language and further stated that they issued threats to intimidate voters who did not cast their ballots in favor of the APC.

He said, “I am not a member of the Labour Party, but I was assigned as an agent. When the APC thugs recognised me as an LP agent, they beat me up. They also said if voters did not vote for APC, they would beat them too.”
