Authorities reported on Tuesday that a restaurant in Kramatorsk, eastern Ukraine, was struck by a Russian rocket, resulting in the death of at least three individuals and over 40 people being wounded.
According to Ukrainian police, the city was targeted with two S-300 surface-to-air missiles launched by Russia. The interior ministry, through a Telegram message, confirmed that among the casualties were three individuals, including a child born in 2008, whose bodies were recovered from the debris. Additionally, a child born in 2022 was among the injured.
The popular Ria Pizza restaurant was completely destroyed by the strike, which occurred while numerous individuals were present. Yevgen, who was dining with two friends at the time, shared that they were preparing to leave when the explosion took place. Unfortunately, one of his friends was trapped under the rubble. Soldiers and rescue workers swiftly arrived at the scene, where fires continued to burn, as they searched for other potential victims.
Governor Pavlo Kyrylenko of Donetsk stated that two Russian rockets had hit Kramatorsk, a city that previously housed 150,000 residents and remains one of the largest areas still under Ukrainian control in the besieged eastern part of the country. Ruslan, a 32-year-old cook at the restaurant, recounted his experience of being buried in the debris shortly after his arrival but considered himself fortunate to have survived. Natalia, in tears, revealed that her half-brother Nikita, 23, was near the pizza oven and remains trapped under the debris.
The missile strike caused damage to several nearby buildings, and Kramatorsk, frequently targeted by Russia since the invasion in February 2022, is located approximately 30 kilometers (18 miles) from the front line.
An eyewitness, a 19-year-old Ukrainian soldier known as “Ghost,” described hearing a plane flying, followed by a hissing sound and an explosion. He promptly joined the rescue efforts at the restaurant, where an injured girl remained trapped and awaited assistance from the rescue team.
