Thousands of people took to the streets of a Paris suburb on Thursday to participate in a solemn march organized by the mother of a 17-year-old boy who was killed by the police during a traffic stop in France.

The protest was prompted by the deployment of 40,000 police officers nationwide in response to the violent unrest that ensued after the teenager’s shooting on Tuesday.

The demonstrators chanted slogans such as “No justice, no peace” and expressed their discontent with law enforcement. Mounia, the mother of the victim named Nahel, rode in an open-top truck and acknowledged the crowd’s support while wearing a white t-shirt bearing the words “Justice for Nahel 27/06/23.”

The incident, caught on video, in which the teenager was fatally shot at close range in the chest, has reignited longstanding concerns in France regarding police tactics. Following clashes between protesters and security forces that resulted in 170 injured personnel and 180 arrests, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin characterized the unrest as an attack on the symbols of the republic rather than a minor demonstration.

As protests are expected to continue into Thursday night, bus and tram services in the Paris area will be suspended from 9:00 pm, according to Valerie Pecresse, the president of the surrounding Ile de France region.
