The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public announcement expressing concern about a batch of unsafe Sprite 50cl glass bottles that have appeared in Nigeria.

This disclosure follows an investigation conducted by NAFDAC’s post-marketing surveillance unit prompted by a consumer complaint.

Upon further examination, it was determined that more than five crates of the identified batch of Sprite 50cl glass bottles were contaminated with particles.

In response, NAFDAC has taken immediate action by collecting samples from the affected batch for laboratory analysis at their own facility.

The agency has also instructed its zonal directors and state coordinators to carry out surveillance and remove the affected batch from circulation.

To investigate the issue more comprehensively and identify the cause of the contamination, NAFDAC will conduct a thorough inspection of the manufacturing site to assess its compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) standards.

This step aims to ensure that the proper marketing authorization protocols are followed and to prevent future incidents.

Following the findings, NAFDAC has directed the Nigerian Bottling Company Limited (Abuja plant), the manufacturer of Sprite 50cl glass bottles, to initiate a recall of the affected batch and cooperate fully with NAFDAC during the monitoring process.

The specific batch in question is AZ6 22:32, with a manufacturing date of 180423 and an expiration date of 180424.

NAFDAC urgently advises caution to distributors, retailers, and consumers, urging them to abstain from consuming, selling, or distributing the implicated batch.

It is crucial to carefully examine the authenticity and physical condition of the product before engaging with it.

Individuals who possess the aforementioned batch of Sprite 50cl glass bottles are strongly encouraged to surrender their stock to the nearest NAFDAC office.

If anyone has consumed this product or experienced any adverse reactions after consuming it, they should seek immediate medical advice from a qualified healthcare professional.

NAFDAC also encourages the public to report any suspicions regarding the distribution and sale of unsafe packaged food products to the nearest NAFDAC office or by contacting NAFDAC directly via phone at 0800-162-3322 or email at sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.
