Mason Mount, the England midfielder, is set to join Manchester United from Chelsea in a transfer deal worth £55m, with an additional £5m in potential add-ons. The contract is expected to span five years. This signing marks Erik ten Hag’s first acquisition for the summer as he aims to bolster United’s squad following their qualification for the upcoming season’s Champions League.
To alleviate Financial Fair Play concerns, Chelsea, who had spent £600m in the previous season, needed to sell players before the end of June. Although Chelsea initially rejected three bids from United, negotiations between the two clubs resumed this week, ultimately leading to a resolution.
While Chelsea would have preferred to retain Mount, they were unable to reach a satisfactory agreement on a new contract, considering his current deal was set to expire next year. Mount, who joined Chelsea at the age of six, has made 195 appearances for the club since his senior debut in 2019, scoring a total of 33 goals. However, he missed the conclusion of the domestic season due to injury, which resulted in Chelsea finishing in 12th place, their lowest position in over 25 years.
