Supervising the operation personally, the council chairman informed reporters that it was necessary to evacuate individuals engaged in roadside trading and those who had constructed temporary structures under the high tension wire. These activities posed significant risks to the safety and well-being of the local residents.
“The state Governor, His Excellency Sheriff Oborevwori was in Ughelli last week and he directed that all traders and businessmen trading along East/West road by Otovwodo junction to relocate immediately within week of grace or prepare to face the long arm of the law.
“Successive government of the state has advised the traders and market women trading along the walkways to leave but they are adamant to the state government instructions.
“Today we are here to enforce the state government directives, we are pulling down all structures, caravans along the road for ease flow of movement”.
While cautioning the traders and market women conducting business along the roads and pathways within the council areas, he emphasized that they must not challenge the authority of the state government. He further stated that a task force would be deployed to apprehend any individual who violates the law, and they would face severe consequences as a deterrent to others.
In addition, addressing the media, Mr. Monday Ohwesiri, the Commandant of the Vigilantes Group of Nigeria (VGN) in Delta State, appealed to the market women and traders to understand and support the state government’s pragmatic agenda to foster development and deliver the benefits of democracy to all residents of Delta State.
Ohwesiri assured the state government that the Delta State chapter of VGN is prepared to collaborate with their developmental initiatives and contribute to ensuring a crime-free state.
