Grant Amnesty To Bandits- Yerima Tells Tinubu

Ahmad Yerima, the ex-governor of Zamfara State, has encouraged President Bola Tinubu to contemplate engaging in discussions with bandits in order to address the security challenges prevalent in the North-West region of the country.

Yerima has advocated for the Federal Government to initiate negotiations with “reformed” bandits, asserting that resorting to military force could result in unintended harm to innocent individuals and should therefore be regarded as a final option.

In an earlier interview with BBC Hausa, the former governor urged the governors of the North-West region to engage in dialogue with the bandits who are causing terror in the area.

“The best way to go about handling the issue of bandits is to introduce dialogue first. But as I said, if that fails, then the government will go all out to eliminate them,” he said after a courtesy visit to the President on Monday at Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.

Over the course of approximately ten years, Zamfara State, situated in the North-West region of Nigeria, has experienced a volatile situation marked by armed conflicts between the military and bandits vying for control over the state’s mineral-rich areas.

Yerima suggested that President Bola Tinubu should contemplate implementing an amnesty program for bandits in the northern part of the country, similar to the initiative undertaken by the late President Umar Yar’Adua for the militants in the Niger Delta.

“I believe that the Nigerian military has the capacity to deal with them (bandits) if so directed and given the resources, support, and political will.

“But the collateral damages that will be associated with the actions to be taken are what I believe should be avoided. If you send an aircraft now, not only bandits will be affected.

“Former President Umaru Yar’Adua had a similar interaction with the militants in the Niger Delta, and it was successful,” Yerima said.
