According to Forbes, on Wednesday, July 5th, Meta, the parent company of Instagram, launched Threads, a text-based companion to Instagram that resembles other text-based social platforms like Twitter.
The next day, Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, announced that Threads had attracted a staggering 30 million users on its initial day, surpassing its competitors by a wide margin.
Shortly after the unveiling of Threads, Alex Spiro, an attorney representing Twitter, sent a letter to Mark Zuckerberg, accusing him of utilizing Twitter’s “trade secrets and other intellectual property” to develop Threads, which directly competes with Twitter.
The attorney wrote: “Twitter intends to strictly enforce its intellectual property rights, and demands that Meta take immediate steps to stop using any Twitter trade secrets or other highly confidential information.
“Twitter reserves all rights, including, but not limited to, the right to seek both civil remedies and injunctive relief without further notice to prevent any further retention, disclosure, or use of its intellectual property by Meta.”
In addition, Spiro alleged that Meta had recruited numerous former Twitter employees, who possessed insider knowledge of Twitter’s trade secrets and other extremely sensitive information, with the purpose of creating the ‘Threads’ app.
