Yusuf Ismael Isah, a 32-year-old man from Okene, Kogi State, has been apprehended by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for his involvement in the assault on Apostle Johnson Suleman, a prominent religious figure and the founder of Omega Fire Ministries Worldwide, Auchi. The attack took place on October 21, 2022, on the Benin-Auchi Road, resulting in the tragic deaths of six individuals, including three police officers.
Following a thorough investigation conducted by the FIB-IRT operatives, Isah was captured. The law enforcement team was actively pursuing the assailants involved in the incident. During the operation, two members of the seven-person gang were killed in separate confrontations with the police, while the remaining four are still at large.
Isah, who works as a plumber in Agbaraoluwa Phase 2 Ijoka, Akure, Ondo State, was apprehended at his residence. The authorities discovered five AK47 rifles, two K2 assault rifles, 180 live ammunition, and four suspected improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in his apartment. Further investigations revealed that some of the rifles found in Isah’s possession had been seized from the three police officers who lost their lives during the October 21, 2022 attack.
The suspect confessed to journalists that he joined the ruthless gang in 2021 after being released from Olokuta Correctional Centre, where he had been held since 2019 on charges related to armed robbery. Isah revealed that he and his accomplices had tracked the pastor before carrying out the assault, utilizing the five AK47 rifles.
He said, “The attack on him (Suleman) was to assassinate him. I was not part of the discussion; Ilayasu and Labisca were the ones involved in the discussion.
However, he maintained that he was unaware of the individual who ordered the assassination of Suleman.
Isah also disclosed that the gang specialized in ransom kidnappings and had conducted approximately four such operations between 2021 and 2023, including the attack on Apostle Johnson Suleman’s convoy. Their criminal activities came to an end when the police finally dismantled the gang.
