Don Jazzy, a renowned Nigerian producer and music executive, also known as Michael Collins Ajereh, recently disclosed the reasons behind his decision not to sign popular afrobeats stars, Wizkid and Davido, to his former record label, Mo’Hits.
According to the head of Mavin Records, he couldn’t sign Wizkid because Banky W, the CEO of EME, had already approached and signed him before he had the opportunity to do so.
In the case of Davido, Don Jazzy explained that he recognized Davido’s potential for success even without the support of a record label, so he chose not to sign him.
Additionally, Don Jazzy expressed regret over not signing Simi and Teni. He mentioned that he almost signed the rapper Falz The Bahd Guy, but unfortunately, the deal fell through.
These revelations were made during Don Jazzy’s appearance as a guest on the Leaderboard podcast, hosted by Fisayo Fosudo.
He said, “I like Simi, I didn’t sign her. I wish I did. I like Teni, but I didn’t sign her. I wish I did.
“I had the opportunity of signing Davido but I didn’t because I kind of figured that he would be fine. Wizkid, obviously, I couldn’t because Banky W got to him first. That would have been amazing.
“Falz, I love his work. We almost had a deal.”
