Declan Rice made history by becoming the most expensive player in Britain, as Arsenal secured the signing of the English midfielder from West Ham for a reported £105 million pounds ($137.5 million). This blockbuster transfer exceeded the previous record fee of £100 million paid by Manchester City for Jack Grealish in 2021, as Arsenal continues their significant spending spree in their pursuit of challenging for the Premier League title next season.
In a letter addressed to West Ham supporters, the 24-year-old expressed his aspiration to compete at the “very highest level,” which motivated his decision to join Arsenal. Rice’s move to the Emirates Stadium on a long-term contract occurs just a few months after he helped West Ham secure their first major trophy since 1980 in the Europa Conference League final against Fiorentina.
With his transfer across London, Rice will now have the opportunity to vie for the Champions League instead of Europe’s third-tier trophy.
“In football, amazing opportunities arise. Big clubs, like Arsenal, have come for me and it’s really hard to turn down,” Rice told Arsenal’s website.
“You only ever get one career and I really believe in what Mikel (Arteta) is building here and the squad he’s building. I’m really looking forward to the future with Arsenal.” he said
