Niger Coup: ECOWAS Military Chiefs To Meet Saturday

West African military leaders are scheduled to convene on Saturday subsequent to a summit that directed the dispatch of a “readiness force” in the quest to address the crisis in Niger, regional military sources have indicated.

The discussions involving chiefs of staff from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are slated to occur in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, as relayed on Friday, as reported by AFP.

Following the recent Extraordinary Summit held in Abuja, the regional coalition has issued a directive for the immediate deployment of a readiness force to reinstate constitutional order in Niger.

This decision stems from the Niger junta’s failure to honor a given timeframe to release deposed President Mohamed Bazoum and reinstate democratic governance.

In lieu of this, the junta has established a new government to be led by a transitional prime minister, Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine.

Reacting to the bloc’s readiness force, the junta has issued a threat to eliminate Bazoum should any military intervention arise from neighboring countries.

This information reportedly surfaced via a senior US diplomat.
