CAN Condoles With Muslims Over Zaria Mosque Tragedy, Calls For Thorough Investigation

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has offered condolences to the Muslim Ummah in Zaria and the entire nation following the tragic collapse of a portion of the Zaria Central Mosque. The collapse resulted in a significant loss of life and injuries.

Furthermore, the leading Christian organization has called upon the government and all concerned parties to thoroughly investigate this tragic event, aiming to prevent such incidents in the future and ensure the safety of worshippers nationwide.

CAN acknowledged that the historic Zaria Central Mosque, a structure with more than 150 years of religious and historical importance, was filled with worshippers during a Friday prayer when a part of the building collapsed.

Regrettably, this incident led to the unfortunate demise of at least 10 worshippers, with an additional 25 individuals sustaining injuries.

Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the President of CAN, said in a Saturday statement, “It is with shock that we received the news of the untimely demise of these worshippers. We offer our sincere prayers and condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in this unfortunate incident. We also extend our thoughts and prayers to the injured, and we pray for their quick and complete recovery.”

Acknowledging the strong emotional bond between the Muslim community and the mosque, CAN conveyed its support for those who lost loved ones or were injured, underlining the collective sorrow felt by all.

“We stand united as one people, acknowledging the importance of mutual respect, understanding, and peaceful coexistence among the various religious communities in Nigeria,” Okoh added.

Applauding the prompt actions of pertinent authorities and emergency responders in swiftly rescuing survivors and offering essential medical care, CAN also emphasized the importance of conducting a comprehensive inquiry into the incident’s underlying factors.

“We urge the government and all relevant stakeholders to ensure a thorough investigation into the causes of this incident, with the aim of preventing such accidents in the future and ensuring the safety of worshippers in all places of worship across the country,” Okoh stated.

In light of this unfortunate occurrence, CAN additionally urged religious leaders from both the Christian and Muslim communities to enhance interfaith conversations and mutual understanding. This effort aims to cultivate a society where religious beliefs can be practiced harmoniously and without hindrance.

“May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace, and may the injured recover quickly. Let us unite, support, and comfort each other during this difficult time. May God grant us all strength and peace,” concluded Okoh.
