Running Mate Of Slain Ecuadoran Candidate To Run For President

The party announced that the vice-presidential candidate of the late Fernando Villavicencio, who was killed, will now be running for president in the upcoming August 20 elections in Ecuador.

“The movement will replace the presidential ticket by putting Andrea Gonzalez as president,” the centrist Construye party said in a statement.

Fernando Villavicencio, a respected 59-year-old journalist and leading figure in the fight against corruption, was fatally shot after a campaign rally in the capital city of Quito on Wednesday evening.

President Guillermo Lasso attributed the murder to organized crime.

Scheduled to take part in Sunday’s presidential debate in Quito, Gonzalez, aged 36, is stepping into the spotlight.

Her efforts have centered on environmental activism, notably concerning marine environments and mangroves, along with efforts to combat the illegal trade of wildlife and the clearing of forests.

“The name of the vice presidential candidate will be announced in the next hours and will be chosen among the most trusted of those who have shared the struggles of comrade Fernando Villavicencio,” the party said.

Up to this point, six Colombian individuals have been apprehended, and an additional person has lost their life in connection with the assassination.
