Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has conveyed his congratulations to the versatile footballer Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, who celebrated his 50th birthday on August 14. Okocha, renowned as one of Africa’s most prominent midfield maestros, received accolades including the African Legend award and the BBC African Player of the Year award in 2004.
He also secured the titles of Best Player and Top Scorer at the African Cup of Nations finals in Tunisia during the same year. Additionally, he captained the Super Eagles during the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan.
During his time with the Nigerian National team from 1993 to 2006, Okocha earned 73 caps and scored 14 goals, making him an integral part of three FIFA World Cup squads. Governor Oborevwori, through a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, praised Jay-Jay Okocha as an exemplary footballer whose contributions to both Nigerian and global football have been noteworthy. The Governor commended Okocha for his patriotism, humility, mentorship, and assistance to budding talents, emphasizing his role as a positive ambassador for Delta.
Highlighting Okocha’s extensive football experience, Governor Oborevwori pointed out that he effectively led the Delta Football Association (DFA) between 2015 and 2019.
Oborevwori said: “As one of the most talented footballers Delta has produced, we are proud of your many achievements in the round leather game.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Delta, I congratulate an illustrious son of the State, Austin Jay-Jay Okocha on his 50th birth anniversary.
“As you turn 50, your family, associates and admirers, have cause to be grateful to Almighty God for having granted you a life of wonderful accomplishments”.
The Governor concluded by expressing his prayers for Okocha’s continued blessings and the transformation of him into a symbol that motivates youth within Delta and the entire country.
