According to media reports on Monday, Chelsea have reached an agreement to pay a British record transfer fee of £115 million ($146 million, 133 million euros) for Moises Caicedo, the midfielder from Brighton and Hove Albion. Despite interest from Premier League rivals Liverpool, who had reportedly agreed to a record fee of £110 million with Brighton on Friday, it has become evident over the weekend that Caicedo’s preference is to join Chelsea.
He is set to sign an eight-year contract with the west London club. Following Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool in their Premier League opener on Sunday, they are hopeful that Caicedo will be ready to play in their upcoming match against West Ham United next weekend.
It’s possible he may play alongside Enzo Fernandez, who became the then British record signing at £107 million after joining from Benfica earlier this year. Caicedo was not included in Brighton’s squad for their 4-1 season-opening victory against Luton Town on Saturday.
