In New Zealand, a South African woman named Lauren Anne Dickason was found guilty by a jury on Wednesday for the murder of her three young daughters. The verdict stated that she would face a life sentence for each of the killings.
In September 2021, shortly after migrating from South Africa to their new home in Timaru on the South Island, Dickason killed her two-year-old twins and their six-year-old sister. Despite claims of possible insanity, a majority decision from the jury of eight women and four men concluded that Dickason was mentally sound at the time of the murders and thus guilty of murder.
The trial, which lasted for a month in the city of Christchurch, led to emotional reactions from some jury members. Upon returning home from a dinner with colleagues, Dickason’s husband discovered the three children deceased and his wife in a critical condition.
The prosecution argued that Dickason was fully aware that her actions were morally wrong and constituted murder when she took her daughters’ lives. As she awaits sentencing, Dickason has been under custody in a psychiatric unit of a hospital since the time of the murders.
