FG Approves N5bn Subsidy Palliative, 5 Trucks Of Rice For Each State

The National Economic Council (NEC) announced on Thursday that the Federal Government has given its approval for a N5 billion grant to each of the 36 states in the country. This grant aims to assist with the acquisition of grains and also includes five trucks of rice for each state. These measures have been implemented as palliatives to alleviate the impact of the removal of fuel subsidies.

Additionally, the NEC has sanctioned the distribution of 40,000 bags of maize to be allocated among the states.

Furthermore, the NEC instructed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide food supplies to states that share a border with Niger Republic, due to the recent political instability in that country.

These decisions were reached during the NEC meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State, speaking to State House correspondents after the meeting, explained that the approval of the N5 billion grant and provisions of rice and grains are temporary measures aimed at mitigating the rise in living costs resulting from the subsidy removal. The government intends to complement these initiatives with more sustainable programs in the future.

He mentioned that the states have been directed to procure 100,000 bags of rice and beans, along with other commodities.

Zulum also conveyed that the NEC had tasked NEMA with the responsibility of supplying food items to states that share borders with Niger Republic.

Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra state added that the process of revising the social register was underway.

He highlighted that Nigeria was already hosting refugees from Niger Republic, which was impacting the distribution of relief measures.

In contrast, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State indicated that states have received only N2 billion so far, falling short of the approved N5 billion.
