Niger: ECOWAS Declares Readiness For Military Action Against Coup Leaders

Members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), with the exception of Cape Verde and nations under military governance, have affirmed their willingness to engage in a military intervention regarding the leaders of the coup in Niger.

This declaration was made on Thursday during a meeting of defense chiefs from the 15-member regional group in Accra, the capital of Ghana. The objective of the meeting is to strategize on efforts aimed at restoring power to the ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, who was overthrown in a coup on July 26th and held captive.

According to a report by Al Jazeera, Abdel-Fatau Musah, the ECOWAS commissioner, announced on Thursday that all member states, apart from those under military rule and Cape Verde, have signaled their readiness to partake in a standby force for potential action in Niger.

At the start of the two-day meeting in Accra, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, was quoted as saying, “Democracy is what we stand for and it’s what we encourage.”

“The focus of our gathering is not simply to react to events but to proactively chart a course that results in peace and promotes stability,” he added.

The deadline set by ECOWAS for the Niger junta to restore constitutional power to President Bazoum elapsed on August 6. Despite facing severe sanctions from ECOWAS, the leaders of the coup have chosen not to comply with the ultimatum.

In Niamey, the capital of the country, President Bazoum, along with his wife and son, continues to be held hostage.
