A 55-year-old woman, a citizen of both France and Canada, received a prison sentence of nearly 22 years on Thursday. This came after she was found guilty of sending a letter containing the lethal substance ricin to the former US president, Donald Trump.
In January, Pascale Ferrier pleaded guilty to violating regulations that prohibit the possession or use of prohibited biological weapons. Ferrier confessed to producing ricin, an exceedingly poisonous plant-based protein derived from castor bean seeds, in her residence in Quebec back in September 2020.
During that same month, she mailed a letter containing ricin from Canada to the White House, addressing it to Trump. Additionally, she sent poison-laced letters to eight law enforcement officials in Texas.
Her letter to Trump contained “threatening language” and called on him to withdraw from the looming election, according to the Justice Department.
“I found a new name for you: ‘The Ugly Tyrant Clown’ I hope you like it,” the letter said. “If it doesn’t work, I’ll find better recipe for another poison, or I might use my gun when I’ll be able to come. Enjoy!”
Around the period when she sent the letter, Ferrier had also taken to Twitter, suggesting that someone should “shoot Trump in the face.”
Threatening the US president is a specific offense that can result in a prison term of up to five years.
According to the Justice Department, Ferrier had been apprehended in Texas in 2019 for possessing weapons, and she placed blame on the very law enforcement officials to whom she eventually sent letters.
Fortunately, the toxic contents of the letters did not harm anyone. All mail destined for the White House undergoes processing at a suburban Washington facility, partly for threat detection.
Following the mailing of the letters, Ferrier made an attempt to enter the United States at an official crossing in Buffalo, New York, on September 20, 2020.
She was taken into custody at that point. Officials discovered a firearm and hundreds of rounds of ammunition in her vehicle, as reported by the Justice Department.
