Man Sets Self On Fire Over ‘Stolen’ Presidential Election, Cost Of Living

An unusual incident unfolded when a 44-second video began circulating online. In the video, a man can be seen dousing himself with a liquid substance suspected to be flammable before igniting it, setting himself on fire on Thursday in Kenya.

The individual, a Kenyan resident, reportedly engaged in this act as a form of protest against the steep cost of living in Mombasa, a bustling coastal city. Positioned atop a statue situated in the center of a busy roundabout, he held the Kenyan flag while immolating himself.

The video quickly gained traction and went viral. Onlookers not only gathered to witness the event but also stepped in to extinguish the flames, rescuing the man. Subsequently, he was transported to the nearby Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital for medical attention.

Although the man’s identity remains undisclosed, he informed witnesses that his actions were motivated by his dissatisfaction with the exorbitant cost of living and his belief that the previous year’s presidential election was “stolen.” This election resulted in the opposition leader, Raila Odinga, losing to President William Ruto. Despite Mr. Odinga’s claims of electoral irregularities, the court upheld the victory, dismissing his allegations.
