Gunmen Kidnap 8 NYSC Members While Going To Camp In Sokoto

Gunmen suspected to be bandits have taken eight individuals from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) captive while they were traveling on a highway in Zamfara State. The incident occurred on Saturday as the victims were on an AKTC bus, traveling from Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to Sokoto State, with a planned stop in Zamfara State to participate in their mandatory national service. The abductors intercepted their vehicle along the highway in Zamfara.

According to an unnamed source within the transport company, who wished to remain anonymous due to lack of authorization to comment on the matter, the total number of corps members was 11, but three managed to escape the gunmen. Aside from the eight corps members, the bus driver was also taken by the abductors.

“The corps members were offloaded (from the bus) and taken into the bush. The police have recovered the bus.

“They left here (Uyo) on Friday, and slept over in Abuja. It was when they were proceeding to Sokoto that they were kidnapped,” he said.

He mentioned that the authorities and security agencies had been informed about the incident.

On Sunday, at 9:14 a.m., a Facebook user named Malachy Blessed revealed the identity of one of the abducted corps members as Emmanuel Esudue, a graduate of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering from Akwa Ibom State University. He added that Emmanuel’s phone had been unreachable since Thursday. Another victim, Betty Udofia, has also been identified. According to a Facebook user named Edidiong Richard, kidnappers have made contact with Betty Udofia’s parents, demanding a ransom of N4 million.

When our reporter reached out to the police spokesperson in Zamfara, Yazid Abubakar, he mentioned that he would verify the incident and provide a response later.

Likewise, as of the time of this press release, the NYSC spokesperson, Eddy Megwa, did not respond to calls made to his phone.
