The recently appointed Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesome Wike, has quashed rumours of his potential defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress. He clarified that the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had given him permission to accept President Bola Tinubu’s ministerial appointment.
Wike, the sole member of the opposition party in President Tinubu’s cabinet, emphasized that his mission in the FCT is to bring about positive changes and restore the Territory to its former glory.
During his inaugural media briefing, the Minister outlined a 10-point agenda that prioritizes matters such as security, city sanitation, preserving the Abuja Master Plan, infrastructure development, revitalizing green areas, eliminating shanties, plugging revenue leaks, addressing ground rent payments, and other key objectives.
When asked about which political party’s flag he would display in his office as FCT Minister, Wike urged FCT residents to focus on pressing issues requiring immediate attention rather than concern themselves with the party flag he might choose to display.
“Why should anyone be bothered about what party flag I will be flying? Okay, bring the PDP flag, I will fly it, bring the Labour Party flag, I will fly it. The FCT is in this state and you think the people are bothered about the party flag I fly?
“I will fly the Nigerian flag and ensure the FCT returns to the dreams of the founding fathers. We will bring FCT back to where it ought to be. So many people have complained that this is not the FCT of the founding fathers. We must tackle the issue of security. FCT should be where people come for holidays,” he said.
Wike further mentioned that upon the president’s announcement of his ministerial appointment, he formally communicated with the PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagun, as well as the South-South zonal chairman and his Rivers State counterpart. In response to his notifications, all of them conveyed their endorsement of the appointment.
