The former Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has been formally charged by the British police with bribery-related offenses. According to Reuters, UK authorities suspect that she received bribes in exchange for awarding lucrative oil and gas contracts, valued in the millions of pounds. Alison-Madueke, who held the position from 2010 to 2015 during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, also served as the president of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
Regarding these charges, Andy Kelly, Head of the National Crime Agency’s (NCA) International Corruption Unit, stated, “We believe that Diezani Alison-Madueke misused her authority in Nigeria and received financial benefits for granting multimillion-pound contracts. These charges mark a significant step in a thorough and intricate international investigation.”
The NCA alleges that Alison-Madueke received various benefits, including £100,000 in cash, chauffeured transportation, private jet flights, luxurious vacations for her family, and the utilization of multiple properties in London. Additionally, the charges specify financial rewards such as furniture, property renovations, staff expenses for the properties, payment of private school fees, and gifts from high-end designer boutiques, including Cartier jewelry and Louis Vuitton products, as detailed by Reuters.
