Yesterday in the Shogunle community of Lagos, a tragic incident occurred involving a 14-year-old girl named Desola Adeoye. It has come to light that Desola, who had been enduring severe domestic abuse from her father, Sunday Adeoye, and stepmother, resorted to consuming insecticide in an attempt to escape further torment.
The distressing situation unfolded when Desola returned from her summer school lesson, only to face threats from her stepmother, who warned her about her father’s impending return and the impending consequences.
Fearing the impending danger, Desola discreetly left her home and ingested the household insecticide. She was urgently taken to a nearby private hospital, where she tragically succumbed to her ordeal.
Tragically, her father arrived and sought to take her lifeless body back home for a secret burial. However, this sinister plan was thwarted by vigilant police officers from the Shogunle Divisional Police station, who were alerted by concerned neighbors.
A neighbour, who drew the attention of a non-governmental organisation called, Advocates for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network, ACVPN, to the incident said, “The late Desola and her two younger sisters were regularly subjected to domestic violence by their biological father and stepmother every time they made mistake.”
To elaborate on this, the neighbor clarified that Desola’s decision to end her life stemmed from her constant dread of enduring her father’s repeated physical abuse.
“Shogunle Community Development Association in Oshodi, CDA, had, on numerous occasions, cautioned their father and stepmother to stop the physical abuse unleashed on their children especially late Desola Adeoye.”
In response to this situation, Mr. Ebenezer Omejalile, the Chief Operating Officer of ACVPN, urged the Lagos State government, the Nigeria Police, and the Nigeria Bar Association to intervene and ensure the safety of the two remaining children in the couple’s care. Additionally, he called for justice to be served in Desola’s tragic case.
