Rivers Govt Closes Church, As Police Arrest Cleric Over Electrocution Of 5 Workers

The Rivers State Signage and Advertising Agency (RSSAA) has closed down the premises of a new generation church in Rumuosi Community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, following the tragic electrocution of five youths. The church was found to be the owner of the metal structure responsible for the accident.

Additionally, the assistant pastor of the church has been apprehended by the state police command in connection with the incident. Five individuals were electrocuted while setting up a metal structure intended for the church’s signage, and four others from the group of nine youths involved are currently receiving medical treatment.

The accident occurred when the metal frame of the billboard came into contact with a live high-tension wire during installation. As a result of the ongoing investigation, RSSAA has temporarily closed the church’s premises.

Grace Iringe-Koko, the Public Relations Officer of the police command, confirmed the arrest of the assistant pastor and noted that the investigation is ongoing, with the arrested individual providing assistance to the police.

Furthermore, Tony Okeha, the Managing Director of RSSAA, revealed that neither the church nor the nine individuals involved in the incident had sought government approval for their actions.

Okeha said: “They do not have any approval from the agency. We have spent time warning people against illegal activities such as this. We regret what has happened but this will serve as a deterrent that people should learn how to do things the proper way.

“The agency regulates what billboard structures should be erected where and whether it will cause visual blind or accident and all such consequences. We go out every day to remove illegal structures because of where they are erected and because of the low standard.”

He cautioned individuals who are erecting billboards without the agency’s permission to cease immediately, emphasizing that those apprehended would face consequences.
