On Wednesday night in Trabuco Canyon, Orange County, Southern California, a tragic mass shooting occurred at a well-known biker bar. Reports from law enforcement sources on Thursday confirmed that at least four individuals lost their lives, and six others sustained injuries in this incident.
Following the shooting, authorities swiftly responded to Cook’s Corner on Santiago Canyon Road, around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday (0230 GMT). Two undisclosed sources revealed that the shooter was a retired law enforcement officer from Ventura County. Additionally, it was suggested that up to five individuals may have tragically lost their lives in the shooting.
The sources also indicated that the gunman appeared to be targeting his estranged wife. However, it remains unclear whether he tracked her to the location before opening fire on the crowd. Thankfully, there is no longer an active threat, as confirmed by the sources.
Cook’s Corner, a long-standing hangout for motorcycle enthusiasts, is situated at the convergence of El Toro, Santiago Canyon, and Live Oak Canyon roads, near O’Neill Regional Park. On the evening of the incident, a five-piece Orange County rock band called M Street was scheduled to perform at the bar at 6:30 p.m., according to the venue’s online calendar. Earlier that evening, the band shared a video on its Instagram page, showcasing their instruments set up on a small stage in the still-empty, wood-paneled bar.
“I’m heartbroken by the news of yet another mass shooting tonight, this time at Cook’s Corner, a historic bar in the heart of Orange County.
“My heart breaks for the families and loved ones of the victims,’’ state Senator Dave Min, an Irvine Democrat, said in a statement.
Cook’s Corner derived its name from Andrew Jackson Cook, who acquired approximately 190 acres of Aliso Canyon through a land exchange back in 1884, as reported by a story in The Times.
His son, Earl Jack E.J. Cook, took the initiative to launch a roadside hamburger establishment in 1931. Following the repeal of prohibition in 1933, alcoholic beverages were introduced to the menu, transforming Cook’s Corner into a fully-fledged bar.
In the year 1946, Cook made a significant move by purchasing an old mess hall from the Santa Ana Army Air Base and transporting it up El Toro Road, giving rise to the establishment known as the tavern.
During the 1970s, motorcycle enthusiasts stumbled upon this place, and since then, it has maintained its status as a beloved and enduring hotspot for many years.
