Corruption: We Must Review Judges’ Remuneration- Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has announced that his government is contemplating a review of judges’ remuneration as part of their efforts to effectively combat corruption within the judiciary. The statement was made through his spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, on Friday during his meeting with the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), headed by Barrister Yakubu Maikyau (SAN).

President Tinubu assured that a comprehensive assessment of the remuneration structures for judicial officers across the nation would be completed by his administration.

He emphasized that addressing corruption requires a comprehensive examination of the salaries and perks of judicial officers, an area he’s well-acquainted with due to his successful reforms within the justice system in Lagos State.

“We must deal with the review of remuneration if we truly want to fight corruption in the Judiciary. We will look at the cost as well as the consequences,” he said in response to a request by the NBA president.

Tinubu also recognized the importance of addressing the existing Supreme Court vacancies, underscoring that these openings are responsibilities that should be met in accordance with the recommendations made by the National Judicial Council (NJC).

“Majority of them are on holiday now and when they return, we will take a look at what they have and we will fill the vacancies. It’s a fulfillment of an obligation,” he said.

The President expressed his gratitude to the NBA for inviting him to officially inaugurate their 63rd Annual General Conference scheduled for this weekend in Abuja.

He also recognized the privilege of having several lawyers as key members of his close team, including the Chief of Staff, Rt. Hon Femi Gbajabiamila, the State Chief of Protocol, Amb. Victor Adeleke, and his Principal Private Secretary, Prince Damilotun Aderemi.
