Tottenham’s strong beginning under Ange Postecoglou continued with a 2-0 triumph over Bournemouth, propelling them to the top of the Premier League on Saturday. James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski were the heroes of the match.
Despite the departure of their all-time leading goalscorer Harry Kane to Bayern Munich, Postecoglou’s squad has been unfazed, with new signing Maddison playing a pivotal role in their success.
Maddison scored his first goal for Tottenham in the 17th minute, justly reflecting their dominance in the first half.
Bournemouth appeared more likely to score in the second half, but Kulusevski found the net after an hour, redirecting Destiny Udogie’s cross into the far corner.
Maddison, who had been doubtful due to an injury, proved his worth as a £40 million signing from Leicester and was fortunate with his goal, as his scuffed finish caught the Bournemouth goalkeeper off guard.
While Maddison shines for Tottenham, Richarlison struggled to fill Kane’s shoes and was substituted after an hour.
Tottenham could have extended their lead, but Bournemouth started brightly in the second half.
Antoine Semenyo came close to equalizing with a curling effort that hit the side-netting.
Tottenham sealed the victory with another new face making a strong start to the season. Udogie, signed last summer, surged forward and set up Kulusevski for the crucial second goal.
This win puts Tottenham one point ahead of Arsenal, Brighton, and Manchester City at the top of the table, although they’ve played one more game. Arsenal has a chance to regain the lead when they face Fulham later, aiming to maintain their perfect start.
Meanwhile, Manchester United is also in action at Old Trafford, hoping to improve on their sluggish start to the season.
